ABOUT MEHRDAD

Mehrdad is partner at Harlowe & Falk LLP. Prior to Harlowe & Falk, Mehrdad practiced in the international tax department of KPMG LLP, where he served as adviser to multiple multinational companies, including large partnerships, corporations and Fortune 500 entities.

 

Mehrdad is also an adjunct professor at the University of Washington School of Law, Masters in Tax Program, as well as an adjunct professor in the Golden Gate University Masters in Tax Program, where he teaches classes in international tax law to both attorneys and CPAs. Mehrdad currently teaches a class on international estate planning (UW T523) at the University of Washington in the Law School's masters in tax program. 

 

Mehrdad's practice includes assisting companies of all sizes, in all business and tax matters along with individuals with cross-border issues. This includes advising closely held businesses to establish new business entities, advising on regulatory and tax matters, succession planning, and tax efficient planning for purchases or sales of existing businesses. He also assists individual clients with international income tax and estate tax planning. 

 

Mehrdad routinely provides tax consulting services to clients with international operations. His clients include:

 

  • U.S. companies with foreign operations

  • Citizens of the U.S. doing business and investing overseas

  • Foreign individuals and businesses dealing with U.S. taxation issues

 

Mehrdad works with clients locally in the greater Seattle area, nationally, and internationally to create efficient international tax structures by helping clients find solutions related to:

 

  • Subpart F and taxation on Controlled Foreign Corporations (“CFCs”)

  • Taxation of Passive Foreign Investment Companies (“PFICs”)

  • Taxation of Qualified Election Funds (“QEF Fund”)

  • Branch profits taxation

  • Foreign tax credit planning

  • Taxation of foreign investment in U.S. real property

  • Cross-border withholding tax

  • Attaining benefits under international tax treaties

  • Planning related to Global Intangible Low Tax Income ("GILTI")

 

He also consults with U.S. based exporting companies to determine whether they qualify for IC-DISC tax incentive benefits, and assists in both implementation and maintenance of IC-DISC structures.

 

Mehrdad is also involved in his community as a committee member of the Washington State District Export Council, committee member of the continuing legal education committee of the Washington State Bar Association, an adviser to the Iranian American Community Alliance ("IACA"), and member of the Washington State Bar Association Tax Section.
